Effortless
Here’s a dynamic action shot of me and my co-facilitator, Carol Tu, at our workshop last week.
We are facilitating. And at the critical juncture of the session.
🧡 The moment of truth.
🧡 Crunch time.
🧡 The heart of the matter.
And they don’t need us.
Ouch.
But it wasn’t about us.
Our group had clear instructions.
They had been divided into groups (clumsily by me, but that’s another story.)
They knew how much time they had.
So, they dived deep into their discussion about their work f&!k ups.
We weren’t redundant. Our hard work had paid off.
The effort we put into designing the session made for less effort in the room.
I’ve banged on before about how your workshops shouldn’t feel like work outs.
But it is hard to let go of the belief that we should look like we’re putting in an effort.
As another co-facilitator confessed while we were sitting down as the group worked, “…sometimes I feel like I should be doing something!”
I’ve said that myself. I get it. If you feel like this sometimes sit on your hands.
Doodle. Have a drink of water. Tidy up the post it notes. Put the caps back on the markers. Take a few photos.
Just don’t intervene with the group—unless they ask you.
Being is what’s needed. Not more doing.
And if you can’t get comfortable with just ‘being’, you can tell yourself you’re ‘holding the space’ 😉.
But I bet they’ll keep on talking if you leave the room—as I often like to do.
They will be fine.
Leave. Them. Be.
It’s worth making the effort to be effortless.
Stay (fl)awesome!
