On the precipice
Elective surgery has now resumed in Victoria, where I live. Stretched hospitals face a backlog of 60,000 patients.
It’s estimated that the Victorian Magistrates Court will face an equally daunting backlog of adjourned cases from November.
What has been put on hold in your organisation until restrictions on physical gatherings lift? What consultations and workshops with stakeholders and communities?
“It feels like we’re on a precipice,” Cristian, a manager in a local council, said to me recently.
Project leaders are now coming to Cristian for help on how to engage stakeholders and communities online. He was surprised to learn that quite a few had been counting on public health restrictions lifting sooner rather than later.
Decisions must still be made, projects completed, services delivered, and programs developed.
Even though Cristian and his team have been flat out for months running online workshops and consultations for priority projects, he is only just realising that there are many, many more in the wings.
“It feels like they’ve been avoiding going online,” he said. Now they have to bite the bullet and don’t know where to start.
“We need to run a two-day workshop with seniors on our ageing at home policy,’ said one. “What’s the best way to do that?”
“We need to talk with parents of primary school children about our after-school program,” said another. “We did our survey months ago and haven’t had the conversations yet.”
A whole lot of projects have been put on hold for when we’re allowed to get together. They can’t be delayed any longer.
Just when you thought the transition to online was ‘done’, the dam wall breaks. If you’re the workshop guru in your organisation, are you:
👩🏽🏫 Teaching others how to do it?
👩🏾🤝👩🏾 Guiding others as they do it themselves?
💻 Facilitating for them?
I’m helping people like Cristian with all three as they stand on the edge of this engagement precipice.
If you find yourself facing a similar situation and would like a sounding board, I’m offering a complimentary 45-minute session to three people this month. See below for how to book.

Work with me to get the best of both worlds for your next workshop.
I can help in three ways:
Teach you how to design a workshop that delivers. Tip: no icebreakers 😉!
Guide you as you design your own workshops. Sense check your workshop plan, brainstorm ideas for activities, de-brief after or in the middle if things are going pear-shaped.
Facilitate for you: I work with you to design, deliver and evaluate an engaging and creative session that delivers the outcomes you need.
