Fusion facilitation

Facilitators have always been like chefs. We work with what’s in the fridge to create (hopefully) delicious meals.

Good fusion chefs combine the food of different cultures together to create something new. We don’t always know how they do it, but we want to keep going back to their restaurant.

In this new, uncertain world, we are like fusion chefs, bringing together the best of both worlds, from face-to-face and online facilitation.

I served up a French-style omelette with a Vietnamese salad one night this week. Not exactly haute-cuisine, but fusion nonetheless. I’m told it was delicious. Most importantly, it suited the context.

We were both working away (are your work and life lines blurry too?) and before we knew it, it was 8pm. Lockdown curfew and too late for take away. Dinner had to be fast, light and healthy.

I’m just as interested in how we blend face-to-face and online facilitation techniques to suit our context and purpose.

Turns out Rebecca Sutherns, a Canadian facilitator was just as curious and we had a few conversations. We recorded them in case you were as curious as us.

Over the next few weeks, I’m going to share our video riffs on the Best of Both Worlds.

In the first one, we talk about what the best of both worlds look like for us after several months of the ‘new normal'. We acknowledge the grief that many of us feel for what we have had to leave behind with face-to-face facilitation.

My partner watched the videos and his interest grew with every minute. His verdict? Two engaging women who know their stuff having a really interesting conversation.

I hope it leaves you feeling that we are in this together and a bit inspired by the ‘new normal’ rather than overwhelmed. Curious to new stuff, but not throw the baby out with the bath water.

Enjoy! And please drop me a line to share your thoughts. I’d love to build on the conversation.
