Beautiful choices

Hey, thanks for welcoming me back to your inbox in 2025.

Summer has still got a while to go in the Antipodes. Have you still got your thongs on? You might call them ‘flip flops’ where you live 😉

Turns out that choosing to keep that ‘wearing my thongs’ feeling could actually be one of your beautiful choices for the year.

I’m choosing to make beautiful choices instead of making resolutions this year. If it goes well, I’ll keep it up every year after that. Until I get cynical.

And my first beautiful choice is to share this with you – it might just resonate. In your work and maybe in your life. Well – is there much of a divide anymore? Maybe that’s a beautiful choice for you too.

Anyway…..

I bumped up against this phrase late last year, when I chose to go on stage to find the funny in sustainability.

You read that right.

On stage.

Find the funny - in sustainability.

Belina Raffy, of Sustainable Stand Up, guided me and five other novice comedians in making beautiful choices in our content and delivery over a few weeks before our premier at the Butterfly Club in Melbourne.

I now get why it’s called the Butterfly Club 🦋

Was I nervous? That’s an understatement.

I was terrified I’d repeat my performance at my first piano concert when I was nine. After a nauseous wait in the wings, I ran across the stage, completely ignoring the audience. I belted out Bella Bartok’s ‘Toyshop’, grabbed my sheet music and bolted off. Not a nod to the stunned crowd of proud parents.

Rest easy. I was funny. That’s me channelling Elvis.

By now you’ll have picked my point. Beautiful choices might scare us or take us out of our comfort zone. And it’s worth it.

Clients who come to me with an agenda are usually a facilitation 🚩. This time, I chose to work with one who had a detailed agenda.

This beautiful choice led to a fun and flexible design process, resulting in a creative workshop plan with enough variety to keep a group of leaders engaged over three days. We’re looking forward to it.

Who you choose as a facilitator to work with your group can also be a beautiful choice. Maybe your usual choice doesn’t have the energy that’s needed for your group and their work together. Maybe you’ll get a better result if you choose a facilitator who does this differently to what you expect.

It’s a new phrase for me, but turns out, not a new experience. If you look, you’re probably making beautiful choices every day.

✨ I choose to get up about 5.30 to go to yoga.

✨ I choose a salad over pizza - mostly.

✨ I choose to take off for a fortnight just as people are coming back to work.

What beautiful choices are you making right now? How about for this year? Let me know.

Thanks for reading this far.
